just hangin in Tucson...

I have been here in Tucson for about 3 weeks. Its been a good time. Staying at the same place as last year. Same room and same bed too. Still looking for work in the real world. I have been hauling around a PC computer with the necessary software to at least begin some freelance work in 3D. Having a laptop would be ideal for a drifting freelancer, but what I have is solid.

As I begin my slow with-drawl form this car-centric town, I will probably make a week long stop in Boulder. The riding should be snow-free for the most part in the high elevation routes. Maybe I can catch a road race or 2. schedule 2010

3/13 RACE:
I felt I could hang with the 35+ group in the TucsonBicycleClassic. This was last weekend. There was no way I was going to do the cat 2 group without the base miles. This was a 3 stage race. STAGE 1: a 3.3 mile rolling time trial on John McCain road. Funny, after the tt, I didnt feel any more republican. Most people had TT bikes, but the stock bike did just fine. I was sitting 25th/41 with a time of 8:56. STAGE 2: a 60 mile road race on a 20 mile course. I felt better here with a couple efforts at or near the front. Left some for a small sprint and a 6th place. 2 guys up the road gained some time on us. I moved up to 18th in GC. STAGE 3: a 7 lap circuit race on a 5.8 mile course. Fun event with a nice hill. Again, I had fun, had a couple hard efforts and maintained good position. Avoiding the frenzy in the last 200 meters, I rolled across the line. We had the earliest start time of the day at 6:35am. It was dark and cold. I forgot to sign in before my start and was penalized 30 seconds. I dropped back down to 21st in GC. Nothing like warming up in the dark.

The big climb that most people do here in Tucson is the 25 mile climb to Summerhaven using Mt Lemmon rd.

The republicans in Alaska are on the war-path again. Under the radar of health-care and border fences is the massive story of the aerial wolf slaughter. Idaho, Montana and Wyoming all have begun huge legislative propaganda machines to stop any safeguards against the animals. The main premise is that the hunters need more caribou to shoot and kill. So caribou and elk numbers must remain high. However, a wolf is far more intelligent than dogs and has incredible hunting techniques, perhaps better than than some troops in foreign lands. No collateral damage and no wasted kills. If you kill a wolf, I will kill you. Support the Wolf here...

"I beg you, look for the words ’social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words."     Glenn Becky is organizing a march on Dr Kings I have a Dream speech....appalling!

Here is the answer to the question in my BLOG banner..

We will be measured, as a race, by not how tall we can erect our buildings and how many rivers we can dam, but by how diverse our planet will be in the future. And at this rate of global environmental annihilation, we shoud be ashamed and quite unimpressed of our species. (walgreens)

Tucson for a while...

Last week I left Austin, TX and headed west en route to Tucson, AZ. This is where I will spend my next couple weeks riding my bike and calling my home base. Tucson is where I stayed last year and I will stay at the same home as well. The owner is a professional woman who rents out 3 of her rooms. The other 2 rooms are rented by a law student at the UofA, and a ordained pastor who also drives a tourist shuttle bus up one of the canyons. A quiet house for sure with a nice dog, Prowler.

With 4 days of riding from TH-Sunday, I took today off. Monday rest day. If you can handle a little traffic, the riding isnt too bad. Plenty of group rides and the weekly shooutout ride on saturdays gives Tucson a nice set of options. I tried the shootout ride this past saturday. Close to 100 riders showed. Starts at 7am from the UofA hub. I couldnt hold on to the pace at one point. Too far back and too many gaps formed. But with all the riders, groups form and its still game on to rotate and go fast. 60 miles.

Mt Lemmon is the other big draw. With a nifty coffee/cafe shop, LaBuzz, a few miles from the base, Mt Lemmon is a great destination. I went up to mile 12 this past sunday. With inadequate clothing and approaching dark cloud formations, I turned around. A much welcomed rain system was coming in. Mt Lemmon received 11 inches of snow sunday night.

This will contribute nicely to the washes filling up and flowing as they should be at this time of the year. Its refreshing to see some water flow in this concrete and car jungle of Tucson.

I registered for the TucsonBicycleClassic bike race this weekend. Without enough base miles, I entered the 35-44 age group and not the Cat2 category. A 3.3 mile TT, a road race saturday and lastly a circuit race should be enough.

AUSTIN, TEXAS

A week ago Monday, I left Bloomington, Mn en route to Austin, Tx. Deciding to hit Austin first instead of a straight shot to Tucson was a very last minute free-for-all itinerary adjustment. With such a late planned trip, I didnt have a place to immediately stay. I put out some feelers on Facebook and eventually got a nibble. An old high school friend lived just south of Austin. Before heading down I hit Mellow Johnnys Bike Shop in Austin. This is Lances shop he started up a few years ago. Its big. A couple levels. Some rooms for specific bike related activities. Some of Lances bikes are downstairs.

Also through Facebook, a friend of a friend was to be my next place of residence. She was kind enough to put me up for the remaining time in Austin, Wed-Sunday. She was closer to town and it was a little more convenient for quick food and bike needs.

Part of the reason I came to Austin was I noticed a couple circuit races were near town. So I pre-registered before I left MN and made the week in Austin somewhat geared for them. You cant really train for bike races having just come from MN and not have ridden for more than 2 hours in the past 4 months.

Race Recap: Since I wasnt 40 years old, my 2 options was the Cat 2/3 or pro1//2. A no brainer. These guys had been riding for a couple months with plenty of racing already. It was a 61 mile race on a 5.5 mile course, located in the town of Lago Vista. Not flat. Big rolling hills where you could keep momentum. Never used the small ring. I had 3 goals before I started: 1) try and finish with the pack or better, 2) give at least one big effort, 3) have fun and dont worry about placing.
I accomplished all 3. I was 47th out of 100 guys. Pack finish. My big effort was last lap. Took a flyer on a little hill. Nobody came with. Held it for a while. Made them chase. Got caught near the end. Rolled in. Had fun. Sat in the whole time.

Now its off to Tucson for a bit. I will look for animation freelance work while Im there. I have a computer stuffed in the car somewhere.

Austin has plenty of bike stores. However its a huge growing sprawling city. It was often tough to find roads with good shoulders or with few cars.
Oh Canada! Good for you. Thumbs up!

Road trippin...southbound.

Yo-

So, I was let go from my design job in early January, I was weighing options for my spring and summer. With a tighter control on my spending, I am heading south to train and ride my bike. I am leaving Monday the 22nd. First heading to Austin, TX and attempt to race a couple circuit races. I havent been riding outside at all, some xc skiing the last couple months. My fitness will be tested.

Although I disliked Tucson from my previous visit last spring, I think i  will heading there again after Austin. With the same lady who kindly rented a room out of her house, this place is safe, cheap and has everything I need for a couple months. I am bringing my FUJI road bike, some clothes, some tools and a car load of stuff. Normal trip configuration.

Bike swap sort of a success. A late entry left about 20 tables stuck in the back room. Started off slow, then picked up. Made a few hundred.

Reading Michael Pollans latest book, FOOD RULES. America needs to shape up soon and realize that we need to spend time, energy and money on the "preventative" aspect of health and transportation, instead of reactionary methods. I cant thing of one thing where Americant is really a leader in environmental, transportational, health, education etc...compared to Europe, much of Asia, S Korea etc...I am starting to see the incredible consequence of the iPod generation. More gadgets, less book reading = massive problems. This country is falling apart. The current pothole problem is a great analogy to the crumbling infrastructure we have devised. A divided nation both politically and environmentally is leading to unresolved issues and pushing the inevitable 'worse before it gets better' scenarios even farther into the future.

If we all lived more sustainably, this planet would be healthier, its people more coordinated and corporate greed would hopefully one day be less cancerous.

Keep Republicans from Logging our Forests...

This is right up her alley. Dont go to her front door to sell any environmental propaganda. She will ring your neck. Logging the front yard. New digs soon.

Never trust the CIA...

Salaam...

My normal winter/spring training is nearing full bloom: completely without direction and randomly simple. I hit the over-priced and understaffed Ballys about 4 times a week. Maybe get in a cx ski once or twice a week. But for a beginner, I need good edge. Snow has been icy the last couple weeks.

I will be heading back to NOW Bikes to ride for them. I will be getting a new mtn bike. Looking at going back to a 26". The 29"er was good and solid, but I felt sluggish in the singletrack. I seem to buy a new one every year.

Im trying to head to AZ and CO this month or next to train for a month or two.

Look for me at the Bike Swap in Blaine on the 14th. Bring me a valentine. I have a GIRO TT helmet for sale.(has a small crack)

IDS stairclimb this saturday and the City of Lakes Loppett on sunday. Also the start of the Olympics.

According to someone, I have a man-crush on Federer. I got up at 230am to watch his Aussie final against the young and angry Murray.

Keep Hope Alive...

With all the crap in the world, with the crumbling school systems, the growing divide of the people, with the techno-centric homo-erectus fools with their ipods and efinances, there will never be a voice that will be as timeless and guiding as Martin Luther King Jr's.

Amidst the haze of rampant consumerism  and a cancerous monoculture spreading through the cities...there is his voice that will always shine a little brighter. That we can always listen to and re-center our being and soul. Its so sad that nobody listens to him anymore. Most people dont have a fucking clue as to his sacrifices...all of which werent for him, but for the less fortunate, the ones who were told lies from our govt, the ones who all they ever wanted was to live free.

Ronald Reagan never wanted his bday to be a federal holiday. Hannity wont mention that though.

Im sorry Dr King that I live in a country that spends more 'money and time', year after year,  on the military than it does on civil and social uplift...embarrassing, to the last.

A revolution is nearing...

skiing

I made the decision of buying some skis (again) this year. It was disappointing when I first started about 4 years ago, with the bad winter we had, that I sold all my stuff. But this year with the latest snowfall, I bought some skis from Kevin Kvalsten and boots from Gear West. Im very much a beginner with no formal classes as of yet. Just kind of winging it until maybe this weekend when I can join a group for some instruction.

Ive been to Hyland in Bloomington a few times. My knees seem to be ok for skiing, but not running. Not sure if Ive ruined my interior tendons or something but cant seem to run beyond a half hour at the club without getting some major pain.

There seems to be a healthy collection of skiers here in Minnesota. Skate, classic and downhill.

No biking news really. Sold my 29er. Looking to get a new dual for next year.

I had the 'go ahead' from work to move for the winter(contract for 4 months). But our company is struggling now and that has thrown a wrench into the mix. I also would need to find someone to rent my place for FEB 1. If you know of anyone that wants to rent an efficiency in uptown(nice place), please contact me.

Copenhagen matters more than jobs.

An open letter to the next domestic bomber:

With Earth crumbling under the toxic weight of Capitalism and greed, it is my sincere hope that one day somebody will devise a plan to eradicate one of the most consumptive and climate altering cities in the world.

Las Vegas has nothing to offer but energy consuming behemouths, a lethargic white population wasting away in a concrete infested pool of the 7 deadly sins, hundreds of water sucking development projects, unflattering urban sprawl, an unhealthy relationship between city councils and developers, and worst of all; an attraction from oblivious citizens that best supports the reasons why 9/11 happened in the first place.

So, here it is....the coordinates for LasVegas:

TURKEY RIDE 2009

Last Thursday was Thanksgiving. A day that I give thanks for having a strip mall on every block of every city in every state. I woke up at 545 to meet Andy Minier at the Bryant/Greenway starting point.

A quiet, dry, cold and dark but enjoyable ride through minneapolis brought us to the Minnehaha Falls start at 7am. About 30-40 riders gathered with cross and mountain bikes. This is an annual event brought to you by Dan Swanson. Not sure how or why he started it. The off road ride follows the MN river from Mendota to Bloomington, and back.

The conditions were a mix of dry and slime. The slime mud was slick and certain high caliber riders biffed it. But thats what makes this ride so fun. The camaraderie from the array of riders transcends many other group rides.

My feet were froze after 4 hrs on the bike. Andy and I rode back on the Greenway as I split off and headed home to feed my face.
I never found out who or what group made it back to the cars first. I was with the group of Doug, Andy, Zimmerman, Bergman, Pat, and a few others. But I know Sam and Eric Oftedahls group was far ahead of us.
